1935 Duesenberg J-585 Speedster

This 1935 Duesenberg J-585 Speedster was ordered for the Maharaja Hoklar of Indore, India, through the Duesenberg dealership in London. The chassis and engine were shipped to London where the body was fitted and then the car was back to Santa Ana, Ca, where the Maharaja had a home. The car was painted in the state colors of Idore with the Maharaja seal on the front fenders. Subsequently, the car was owned by the Sheikh Muktar of Pakistan before it returned to the United States in 1959.

Note the wicker steering wheel and extraordinarily long sweeping fenders. The scale of the car is incredible for a speedster measuring in at over 19 feet. There is also a rumble seat which can be accessed by a fold out step on the side of the car.

Design and Features
  • Engine: The Duesenberg J-585 Speedster is powered by a massive 420 cubic inch (6.9 liters) straight-eight engine. This engine was capable of producing 265 horsepower in its naturally aspirated form, and it could achieve up to 320 horsepower with a supercharger, making it one of the most powerful engines of its time.

  • Chassis and Suspension: The Model J series featured a robust and advanced chassis with semi-elliptical leaf springs for both the front and rear suspension. This provided a combination of strength and a relatively smooth ride for such a large and powerful vehicle.

  • Body Styles: Duesenberg vehicles were often custom-bodied by renowned coachbuilders such as Murphy, Derham, and LeBaron. The J-585 Speedster is notable for its sleek, aerodynamic design, which was both elegant and sporty. The long hood, sweeping fenders, and low, raked windscreen emphasized its performance capabilities.

  • Interior: The interior of the J-585 Speedster was luxuriously appointed with the finest materials, including leather upholstery, rich wood veneers, and intricate detailing. The craftsmanship and attention to detail were second to none, catering to the wealthy clientele of the era.

Historical Significance
  • Innovation: The Duesenberg Model J series, including the J-585 Speedster, set new standards for luxury, performance, and engineering. The powerful engine, advanced chassis, and bespoke coachwork were groundbreaking and established Duesenberg as a leader in the automotive world.

  • Cultural Impact: Owning a Duesenberg was a symbol of wealth and status during the 1930s. The phrase "It's a Duesy" became synonymous with something of exceptional quality, a testament to the brand's influence and reputation.

  • Racing Heritage: Duesenberg cars were known for their performance and speed, with many models participating in and winning prestigious races. While the J-585 Speedster was more of a luxury performance vehicle, the racing pedigree of the brand added to its allure.

Collectibility
  • Rarity: Duesenberg vehicles were produced in very limited numbers, and each car was often a unique creation due to the custom coachwork. The J-585 Speedster is especially rare and sought after by collectors.

  • Value: Due to its rarity, historical significance, and impeccable design, the 1935 Duesenberg J-585 Speedster commands high prices at auctions. Well-preserved examples with documented histories can fetch millions of dollars.
